Enigma has an electromechanical rotor mechanism that scrambles the 26 letters of the alphabet.
Allan Turing and other researchers at Bletchley Park exploited a few weaknesses in the implementation of the Enigma code and gained access to German codebooks, and this allowed them to design a machine called a Bombe machine, which helped to crack the most challenging versions of Enigma.

Rotors have notches. For rotor I, going from Q to R advances the next rotor, notches depends on each rotors and cannot be configured. Untitled goose game 1 0 74.
Rotors can be mounted in any order but Beta and Gamma can only be in position 4 and must use B Thin or C Thin reflector.
A rotor can have variable initial position (there are 26 positions) which have to be set each time. Rotors have a letter wheel which was fixed in first Enigma machines, but can be set in the latest versions, its position is called Ringstellung.
How to recognize Enigma ciphertext?
The ciphered message has only letters, and no letter in the same position as the initial message.
What is the difference between the initial position of the rotors and the position of the alphabet wheel?
On some rotor wheel, the alphabet is fixed, in this case rotor and wheel are the same thing, but sometimes the wheel is not fixed and can be shifted by an offset from the rotor. Sherlock season 3 720p shaanig subtitles.
